The purpose of this website is to share with the world the "Fulness of the Gospel" of Jesus Christ as contained in the Book of Mormon. The 1840 edition of the Book of Mormon was updated and printed during the lifetime of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. A number of errors included in prior editions were corrected. Unfortunately, accurate print and digital copies of the 1840 edition are scarce. This website makes the 1840 edition available for personal study or research purposes.
The Historic Edition is true to the contents of the 1840 Book of Mormon, including spelling and punctuation errors. The facsimiles have been put into a digital format, and the PDF is available on this website. The availability of these resources will enable and encourage collaboration as well as the exercise of agency in developing formats and versions of this scripture that will inspire others to come to know God by engaging more personally with His word.
The procedure page describes the process followed to create the versions of the 1840 edition of the Book of Mormon available on this website.
We give all the glory to God for the completion of this work. We express gratitude for the many who have contributed to this project and have labored with us. Although other editions were also printed during the lifetime of the Prophet Joseph Smith, the 1841 edition was the 1st European Edition (essentially a reprint of the 1837 edition with British spelling, printed in Liverpool, England), and the 1842 Book of Mormon was a limited-issue of the 1840 stereotyped edition.
